Poetry
University College Dublin
voices of the Irish
voices of reconciliation and healing
Towing an iceberg to Belfast
poetry in Irish
intergenerational trauma
thick
palpable
moveable
compare poets of the Caribbean
Shift shaping
trauma’s of the past
aired out
breathed in
turned under and over tongues
hear the atrocities
of the British Empire
A thousand thumbs
Crushing
life
culture
people
language
rising up
always rising
towing
an
iceberg to Belfast

Empty dart
From UCD
To Bray
Everybody in the pubs
Ireland vs Belguim
From the Dart
Fans outside pubs
Smoking
Subdued
Half time
Nil/nil
By the time we get to Bray
Belgium scored three
Irish man in Italian café
glass of red wine
sipping defeat
good cheer
you going to Naples?
he says
be careful of the mopeds….
3.
A walk
Through Bray
A young woman
Sidles up to Maya
“What about this hair“ she says
“Mi brother used to have hair like this” she says
“Are you a half caste” she says
Maya doesn’t understand
But I do
“yes she is” I say
With blue black hair flying and a wild laugh
She says,
“I’m a half caste too!”
